Photochemical Etching For Finer Features Than Weaving

Velp has added photochemical etching mesh capability for buyers who need aperture and feature sizes below what woven cloth can achieve. The process produces burr-free stainless filter screens with apertures down to 0.04 mm, plus slotted and patterned parts that would be difficult to stamp or laser cut at production scale.

Etching works from a photoresist mask applied to both sheet faces, so the same pattern is produced on every part without tool wear. That means the first piece and the ten-thousandth piece are dimensionally identical - a significant advantage for medical, analytical and electronics customers.

• Fine filter screens - 0.04 mm minimum hole size with high open area for precision filtration.
• Slotted mesh - rectangular slots for sieving and fuel or hydraulic screens.
• Patterned parts - encoder discs, speaker grilles, decorative inserts and shielding screens.

Where Etched Mesh Replaces Woven Cloth

Woven cloth is limited by wire diameter: below roughly 25 micron wire, handling and durability become problematic. Etched mesh produces the aperture in solid sheet instead, so a 0.05 mm sheet can carry a 0.04 mm hole pattern and still be handled and welded. This is why etched screens are preferred in analytical instruments, fuel injector filters, medical devices and precision air and liquid filtration.

Etching also avoids the mechanical stress of stamping, so thin parts stay flat. Velp supplies parts on protective film, in trays or on wafer-style carriers for automated assembly lines.

Development Support

Velp accepts customer CAD files and produces first articles for fit and flow testing before production tooling is committed. Because the process uses a digital mask rather than a physical die, design changes require no new tooling cost - a practical benefit for equipment makers iterating on prototypes.
